BaByliss Smooth Finish AS122E: four attachments, one hot air brush

With 1200 watts and an ionic function, this hot air brush also tackles thicker or coarser hair. The four attachments determine what you can do with it: the 38 mm thermal brush adds volume and shape, the 25 mm brush with firm pins lifts the hair at the roots, the 20 mm brush with soft bristles is for fringes or short layers, and the straightening attachment makes hair smooth. This choice makes it a multi-styler, not a one-trick hairdryer.

Settings and controls: three heat settings plus cool shot

Three heat settings give you control over the heat — handy for fine hair that can't tolerate too much heat. The cool shot button sets your style with cool air. The swivel cord of 1.8 metres lets you easily rotate the brush while styling without the cable getting tangled. The ceramic finish is a given, and the ionic technology is designed to reduce frizz.

If you mainly want straight or smooth hair without much variation, a separate straightener might be simpler. This hot air brush is aimed at those who switch between volume, shape, and smoothness — and want to do it at home, without going to the hairdresser.

The attachments are interchangeable, which makes wear and tear — such as worn bristles — replaceable. The weight of 638 grams is on the heavier side for a hot air brush with the motor at the top; if you need to style for a long time, you'll notice it.
