Philips HF3531/01: wake up with light

This wake-up light simulates a sunrise in your bedroom: the light goes from soft red through orange to bright yellow, over a duration you set yourself between 20 and 40 minutes. The light intensity reaches 300 lux — enough to get your biological clock responding, without the harsh blue of a phone screen. The display adjusts its brightness automatically, so it doesn't disturb you at night.

Seven wake sounds, two alarms, one device

In addition to the light, you can choose from 7 natural wake sounds, from birdsong to soft piano, or an FM radio station. The sound swells over one and a half minutes to the level you set. The dual alarm lets you set two separate alarm times — handy if you and your partner get up at different times. A tap on the top snoozes for 9 minutes; two taps activate the night light, a dimmed orange lamp that gives just enough light to find your way.

Who it's for, who it isn't

This Philips is for those who want to wake up with a natural rhythm and put the phone alarm aside. The sunset simulation also helps you fall asleep peacefully. But if you expect to control the alarm via an app, you'll be disappointed: that option is missing. There's also no music from your smartphone as a wake sound — for that you use the FM radio. The USB port on the back does charge your phone, though the adapter delivers 12 W, so fast charging isn't included. The device weighs 730 grams and sits on a rubber anti-slip mat.
