De'Longhi ENV120.GY – an automatic machine for the Vertuo system

The De'Longhi Nespresso Vertuo Next works exclusively with Vertuo capsules. The system automatically recognises which cup you want to brew.

The machine offers five pre-programmed cup sizes: from a 40 ml espresso to a 535 ml carafe. The water volume, temperature and rotation speed adjust automatically per capsule – controlled by the barcode on the rim. This is a closed ecosystem, however: only Vertuo capsules work, Original capsules are not compatible.

With a power of 1500 watts and a heat-up time of 30 seconds, the coffee is ready quickly. The 1.1-litre water tank is removable. After two minutes of inactivity, the machine switches itself off.

De'Longhi ENV120.GY – a system with its own rules

The De'Longhi Nespresso Vertuo Next ENV120.GY works exclusively with Vertuo capsules. That is the premise. This closed system – with six pre-programmed cup sizes – dictates what you can brew. The machine reads a barcode on each capsule and automatically adjusts the preparation accordingly. A 1.1-litre water tank and a pump with 19 bars of pressure form the basis. It is an appliance that removes choice for the sake of consistency.

Automatic capsule detection in practice

The core of the Vertuo Next is its barcode reading. The machine scans each capsule and automatically sets the water volume, temperature, and rotation speed. This delivers five cup sizes: from a 40 ml espresso to a 535 ml carafe. In practice: you choose a capsule, the machine chooses the programme. A trade-off is immediately clear. You cannot manually adjust the volume – the settings are pre-programmed. Flexibility makes way for convenience and repeatability.

Design and dimensions for the countertop

Weighing 4 kg and measuring 31 cm high, 14 cm wide, and 42.3 cm deep, it is a compact machine. The housing is plastic. A non-slip base prevents shifting. The design is sleek, with chrome accents as per the specifications. The power cord measures 80 cm – consider the distance to the power outlet. This is an appliance designed to sit permanently on the countertop.

Daily use and limitations

The ENV120.GY is built for speed and consistency within the Vertuo ecosystem. An automatic descaling function is absent, but a warning light indicates when maintenance is needed. The machine is not dishwasher safe. An important point: it is only suitable for regular coffee. It cannot froth soya or almond milk – a milk frother is not included. It is a single-serve machine for black coffee, in six fixed formats. The promise is simple: insert capsule, press button, coffee out. Nothing more.

The built-in technology ensures every brew follows the same protocol. The 535 ml carafe – intended for sharing – does require a specially designed Vertuo Carafe capsule.
