MasterLock L1200 – fireproof document safe for home use

The MasterLock L1200 protects papers, photos and digital media such as USB sticks against fire and extinguishing water. The safe is UL/ETL-certified for 30 minutes of fire resistance up to 843°C.

In a fire, the safe seals itself hermetically due to the heat – the contents remain protected, but the safe must then be forced open. MasterLock replaces it free of charge (lifetime warranty). That's the trade-off: maximum protection, but single use. The safe weighs 6 kg and has a capacity of 5 litres – compact enough for a desk or cupboard.

The L1200 locks with a key (two supplied). The integrated handle makes it easy to move. External dimensions: 15.6 x 36.5 x 28.4 cm. Internal: 8.9 x 30.5 x 19.1 cm – enough for an A4 folder or a small hard drive.

The MasterLock L1200 is built around a UL/ETL certification that guarantees 30 minutes of fire protection up to 843°C – and that defines the character of this safe. It is a compact, portable solution for home use, designed to secure documents, photos and digital media such as USB sticks or hard drives. The safe locks with a key, not a combination code. With a capacity of 5 litres and a weight of 6 kg, the L1200 fits in a cupboard or on a shelf – but it is not intended for large volumes or heavy items.

Fire and water protection: what the UL/ETL certification means

The UL/ETL certification is the L1200's core feature. In practice: in a fire, the heat seals the safe hermetically, protecting the contents for 30 minutes against temperatures up to 843°C. After that, the safe must be forced open – MasterLock offers a lifetime replacement guarantee in that case. The safe is also water-resistant, offering protection against firefighting water. The trade-off: 30 minutes is a common standard for home safes, but in a major fire that may be too short. This is a safe for first response, not for prolonged fire exposure.

Design and materials – compact and practical

The L1200 is made from ABS, an impact-resistant plastic. That keeps the weight down – 6 kg – and makes the safe easy to move via the integrated handle. The external dimensions are modest: 15.6 cm high, 36.5 cm wide and 28.4 cm deep. The colour is black, the design functional. No frills. The safe is not electric, works without batteries or mains power. That is an advantage: no electronics that can fail. The downside: no alarm, no digital access.

Daily use – what fits and what doesn't

The internal space is 8.9 cm high, 30.5 cm wide and 19.1 cm deep. That is enough for a stack of documents, a few folders, photos, USB sticks, an external hard drive or small electronics such as a tablet. A laptop does not fit – the height is too limited. The safe is intended for home use: important papers, digital backups, jewellery or small valuables. No burglar resistance certification – this is a fire-resistant safe, not a burglar-proof one. If you primarily need protection against fire and water, the L1200 is a practical choice. If you need burglary prevention, a steel safe with certification is a better alternative.

The L1200 comes with two keys and a manual. No mounting hardware – the safe is free-standing. The handle makes it easy to move, but the safe has no fixing points for bolting down. That means someone could take the whole safe. For extra security, it is wise to place the safe out of sight or in a fixed cupboard.
