The MoistureProtect sensor uses infrared technology to assess hair temperature. As soon as the hair is dry, the dryer automatically switches to a lower setting. That sounds technical, but in practice it means less risk of dry, frizzy hair. The ionic conditioner helps – negative ions neutralise static electricity and seal the hair cuticle. Result: shine, less frizz.

The dryer runs at 2300 W and reaches a maximum air speed of 120 km/h. Six speed and temperature settings offer control, from a gentle warmth for fine hair to a powerful flow for thicker hair. The Cool Shot button delivers a blast of cold air to set your style. A diffuser is included – handy for curls or volume. The handle doesn't fold, but there is a hanging loop.

This is a hairdryer focused on protection, not maximum heat. The 2300 W power output is standard for this class, but how that heat is controlled sets it apart.

How the MoistureProtect sensor works

The sensor in the HP8280/00 uses infrared to assess hair temperature. While hair is still wet, heat stays high. As it dries, the dryer automatically switches to a lower temperature. That sounds logical, but most dryers don't do this – they keep blasting at full power until you change the setting. The result: less risk of overheating and shine that doesn't get blown away. The ThermoProtect setting is a fixed, safe drying temperature you can select manually if you want to bypass the sensor.

Design and materials – plastic with a purpose

The housing is plastic, white with pink accents. No metal, no premium feel – but that's not the point here. The weight stays manageable as a result. The handle doesn't fold, so storage takes a bit more space. There is a hanging loop, if you have a hook nearby. The included diffuser is a plus for curly hair or for drying volume without frizz. Two nozzles in total: the standard nozzle and the diffuser. No concentrator nozzle for precision styling, should you need that.

Daily use – what you notice and what you don't

In practice, the Moisture Protect stands out for what it doesn't do: dry out your hair. With normal use, hair feels softer after drying compared to a standard dryer on the same setting. The ions help keep frizz under control – that works especially well on dry or damaged hair. The Cool Shot button is handy after styling: a few seconds of cold air and the shape holds better. The six heat settings offer plenty of flexibility, but it also means you need to get used to the controls. This isn't a dryer you operate blindly. The sensor does its job autonomously, but for the rest you have to switch manually.

One thing to know: the HP8280/00 is not cordless. The 2.50 m cable is long, but you're still tied to a socket. Also, there's no folding handle – travelling with this dryer is cumbersome. It's a home appliance, not one for on the go. The DC motor is quieter than an AC motor, but delivers less torque at low speeds. In practice: it blows hard on the highest setting, but on the low setting the airflow is modest.

The overheat protection is standard, but relevant here because the sensor actively regulates temperature. Should the sensor fail, the thermal protection kicks in. Double protection, then.
