The Philips Moisture Protect HP8280/00 uses an infrared sensor to measure hair temperature and adjust drying heat accordingly. The idea: hair dries faster without losing its natural moisture balance. The sensor continuously monitors temperature and lowers it once the hair is dry. This prevents overheating – a common issue with powerful hairdryers. At 2300 watts and a maximum airflow of 120 km/h, this is not a hairdryer for a quick blast. It is a tool for those who take time over hair care.

The MoistureProtect sensor uses infrared technology to assess hair temperature. Once the hair is dry, the hairdryer automatically switches to a lower heat setting. There is also a ThermoProtect mode that maintains the optimal drying temperature – around 57°C, though that figure isn't in the specs. The difference from a standard hairdryer: here, the temperature isn't adjusted manually; the device responds to the condition of the hair. That is its strength. The downside: the sensor only works when you use it on the correct setting. If you set the hairdryer to a fixed high temperature, the sensor switches itself off. Protection depends on the ThermoProtect mode.

The HP8280/00 is finished in white and pink plastic. The material feels solid, but not premium – you wouldn't expect that at this level. The hairdryer weighs 1082 g including packaging; the unit itself is lighter, but the exact weight isn't in the specs. The handle does not fold, making storage a little trickier. There is a hanging loop, though – handy in the bathroom. The cable is 2.5 m long, enough to reach a socket without tangling. Two nozzles are included: a standard concentrator and a diffuser. The diffuser is intended for curly hair or for creating volume. It is a nice addition, but not every hairdryer user will find it useful.

In practice, you work with two speeds and six heat settings. That sounds like a lot of choice, but the controls are simple: a slide switch for speed, a dial for heat. The Cool Shot button delivers a blast of cold air to set your style – handy after styling, but the cold air isn't continuous. You have to hold the button down. The ionic conditioner works continuously and helps reduce static. Hair becomes smoother and shinier, but on very fine hair, the ion flow can actually make it flatter. That is a trade-off. The MoistureProtect sensor is the heart of this device. It measures hair temperature and adjusts the heat. But: it only works if you set the hairdryer to the correct mode.
